Jesus is the Way!

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Easter blessings to you and yours!  I had almost forgotten how green and lush the world looks this time of year - truly “all creation is shouting for joy!”

This Easter Season, I have been reflecting Jesus’ words, “I am the way, the truth and the life,” and what that means for us as people of faith.  Have you ever overheard a parent say to their son or daughter, “Do as I say, not as I do?” It usually comes at one of those moments when they realize the example they are setting may be less than ideal.  Maybe you’ve been the parent trying to make a wrong right, or maybe you’ve been the child confused at the dissonance between word and deed.

Often, those mentors in our lives, people we look up to and sometimes place our faith in, fall short of the ideal we have in mind for them.  They don’t listen to us as we would hope, they make a decision that is questionable, they take stand on an issue that we strongly disagree with.  Sometimes, the systems, structures and guidelines which have guided our lives fall short when we are faced with some new trial or challenge.  We look for a map, or a rulebook that will make things clearer, tell us which way to turn, and instead we find more gray area.  This was evident to me recently when I had the privilege of sharing a parent’s concern over her son’s hesitation to be confirmed.  He is unsure of taking this step forward because he still wrestles with some of the tenets of our faith.  No easy answers were coming for him, or for her..

During this Easter Season, I find it helpful to remember Thomas’ question to Jesus in John 14:5.  In so many ways, his question is our own question.  ”Lord, we do not know where you are going.  How can we know the way?”  Of course we already know Jesus’ answer to the question:  “I am the way, the truth and the life.”   Jesus doesn’t give us a set of rules, a to-do list or an agenda to follow.  Jesus gives us himself, blessed and broken, poured out for the world. Jesus says, “follow me.”  Certainly, there are many aspects to living a vibrant and committed life of faith, but the essential is just this, following Jesus.  It doesn’t get more simple, more challenging, more life giving than that.

May your way be Jesus this Easter!

Blessings,

Ben

TYME OUT Welcomes New Retreat Director Becca Rauworth!!

Come this fall you will see a new face around the halls of TYME OUT.  Becca Rauworth joined the retreat team this week and is eagerly anticipating her first retreats as a full fledged member of the TYME OUT Community.

Becca is no stranger to TYME OUT or retreats, however.  In fact, she’s been out to TYME OUT on retreats with St. Joe’s parish in Big Bend, as well as worked in multiple other youth ministry settings as well.  Becca says that all of her experiences seem to have led perfectly to this new role and truly sees her coming to TYME OUT as a calling.  “I had a strong calling from a young age that God was going to use my life, my experiences, and the things I’ve learned to help God impact the lives of other teenagers. I hope to finally get to share the love and depth of God with people on a daily basis. I also hope to help others see God in their everyday lives no matter how little (whisper in the wind) or major (burning bush) he is present.”

Becca grew up on a farm, loves the outdoors and her book collection extends beyond the time she has to read.  She has a special interest in travel and experiencing other cultures.  In fact, her list of places visited includes the Dominican Republic, Germany twice, Australia for two months, New Zealand, and Egypt.

When asked how she will know that her ministry at TYME OUT is bearing fruit, Becca says, “I think that success will be measured three-fold. The first aspect being is if I am becoming a more Christ like person in my personal life. The second aspect is if I am helping lighten the atmosphere and be a steward to my fellow colleague. The third aspect will obviously be related to the students.  I think that I will know in small ways, through conversations, students’ reactions or reflections to activities on retreat, and seeing someone open up.”

We’re excited to welcome Becca to the community and look forward to the ways in which she will carry on our mission…helping youth reach the fullness of their potential as individuals created in God’s image.

Welcome Becca!

There is nothing better to me … than a good hug.”

Imagine spending a full twenty-four hours with your grandson or granddaughter playing games, praying together, eating delicious kid-friendly meals, and enjoying the company of other grandparents and their grandchildren.  Last week, we had the delight of doing just this with 6 families on our annual Grandparents and Grandkids Overnight and our theme was the goodness of creation!

As we came together Sunday night, we experienced the timeless reading from Genesis, remembering the awe and wonder that accompanies creation.  Grandparents spent time with their grandchildren talking about favorite memories and hopes for the future.  We walked the outdoor labyrinth together the next morning and did an art project in line with our theme.  The overnight included so much more, but we can’t give away all the secrets!  The pictures will give you a taste! As the event drew to a close, we ended with a prayer service where I heard the following comment: “Now when I look at a sunset or a beautiful summer day, I’ll remember who to thank!”  I am confident that God looked at our simple gathering of faith, fun and fellowship and saw that it was very good!                                                                                                                                                                        We have one more Grandparents and Grandkids Overnight this year on August 9-10.  Grandparents with their 10-12 year old grandchildren are welcome to join us.  Space is still available and this program is accessible to all Christian denominations.  I hope you can join us in the future!  Please call us at 262-966-1800 for more information.

group-shot-1.jpg

We kicked off the year right here at TYME OUT, hosting the confirmation retreat for St. Dominic Parish in Brookfield.  Seventy confirmants along with a dynamic team of twenty-five leaders descended upon our holy grounds from January 2-4 for a weekend of prayer, song, laughter and conversion.

St. Dominic’s has a long history of coming to TYME OUT and we’re always glad to have them back.  To the teens and leaders who joined us this weekend thank you for bringing your warmth and enthusiasm for your faith into our walls.  A building is only a building until God enters it through the hearts of those who walk the halls.  We wish you continued blessings on your journey of faith, and look forward to seeing many of you back next year.

In Christ’s Peace,

Ben Brzeski
