Jesus is the Way!
Tuesday, April 13th, 2010Easter blessings to you and yours! I had almost forgotten how green and lush the world looks this time of year - truly “all creation is shouting for joy!”
This Easter Season, I have been reflecting Jesus’ words, “I am the way, the truth and the life,” and what that means for us as people of faith. Have you ever overheard a parent say to their son or daughter, “Do as I say, not as I do?” It usually comes at one of those moments when they realize the example they are setting may be less than ideal. Maybe you’ve been the parent trying to make a wrong right, or maybe you’ve been the child confused at the dissonance between word and deed.
Often, those mentors in our lives, people we look up to and sometimes place our faith in, fall short of the ideal we have in mind for them. They don’t listen to us as we would hope, they make a decision that is questionable, they take stand on an issue that we strongly disagree with. Sometimes, the systems, structures and guidelines which have guided our lives fall short when we are faced with some new trial or challenge. We look for a map, or a rulebook that will make things clearer, tell us which way to turn, and instead we find more gray area. This was evident to me recently when I had the privilege of sharing a parent’s concern over her son’s hesitation to be confirmed. He is unsure of taking this step forward because he still wrestles with some of the tenets of our faith. No easy answers were coming for him, or for her..
During this Easter Season, I find it helpful to remember Thomas’ question to Jesus in John 14:5. In so many ways, his question is our own question. ”Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Of course we already know Jesus’ answer to the question: “I am the way, the truth and the life.” Jesus doesn’t give us a set of rules, a to-do list or an agenda to follow. Jesus gives us himself, blessed and broken, poured out for the world. Jesus says, “follow me.” Certainly, there are many aspects to living a vibrant and committed life of faith, but the essential is just this, following Jesus. It doesn’t get more simple, more challenging, more life giving than that.
May your way be Jesus this Easter!
Blessings,
Ben
